Mexican wrestling politics is reportedly playing a big part in who we see on AEW TV.
On the 26th of January, AEW announced that CMLL stars Volador Jr, Mistico, Hechicero, and Mascara Dorada would be coming to the promotion, with their appearances kickstarting a relationship between the two companies.
Whilst the partnership has been widely well-received thus far, it is reportedly having an impact on other Mexican talent, as Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter is now reporting that CMLL’s deal with AEW limits any Mexican talent from appearing on the same shows, regardless of whether they work for AAA or not.
“As noted before, the deal with CMLL is that on any television show that their talent appears on, no other Mexican wrestlers can appear. It doesn’t matter if they work for AAA or not, or did in the past, it’s no other Mexican wrestlers can appear. Some of the prior Mexican talent is mad that Tony Khan agreed to those terms, noting that AAA never made a demand like that for AEW to not feature CMLL talent even though they were warring in Mexico.”

AEW’s partnership with CMLL has centred around the lucha libre promotion’s top stars warring with the Blackpool Combat Club, with the company recently announcing that Mistico, Volador Jr, Blue Panther, and Ultimo Guerrero will be facing the unit in Arena Mexico on March 29th, whilst Willow Nightingale will team with Tessa Blanchard and La Catalina to take on the team of Stephanie Vaquer, Zeuxis, and Lluvia, marking the first time that AEW talent have ventured into CMLL’s home.
