‘The Mad Dragon’ won’t be vying for the Intercontinental Championship in two weeks time.
At Money in the Bank, Sami Zayn successfully defended his Intercontinental Championship against Bron Breakker. In the weeks since, the pair have shared many segments with Ilja Dragunov, with many beginning to wonder whether the Russian could find himself in the title picture come SummerSlam in two weeks. However, it now appears as if that is not the plan.
Per Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it’s clarified that Sami Zayn’s SummerSlam title defence is set to be another one-on-one meeting with Bron Breakker, without the inclusion of Dragunov.
“Sami Zayn vs. Bron Breakker for the IC title in a singles match is still on tap. Watching TV, many speculated that it could be a three-way involving Ilja Dragunov but as of earlier this week it was still scheduled as a singles rematch from Money in the Bank.”

It’s also noted that the reason WWE didn’t pull the trigger on Breakker winning the Intercontinental Championship at Money in the Bank is due to the company wanted his crowning moment to come on a bigger show. As such, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Sami lose his gold to Bron at SummerSlam.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on the plans for the Intercontinental Championship as soon as we hear more.
