Rey Fenix looks set to stay with AEW for around another year.
The future of The Lucha Brothers has dominated the headlines ever since rumours emerged early this summer that the duo were planning to depart AEW when their contracts expired. When Penta’s deal came up last week and the 39-year-old became a free agent, it seemed as if the pair could be about to embark on the next step on their careers, however it now appears as if Rey Fenix will be tied to All Elite Wrestling for a long while more.
Per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, it’s believed that AEW have added on around a year of injury time to Rey Fenix’s contract, preventing him from any potential move to WWE.
“Rey Fenix, he’s got a long time left. I’m not exactly sure how long but one of his friends told me like a year as far as injury time they’ve tacked on. And obviously he wants to go to WWE and he can’t go,”
-Dave Meltzer
It’s still expected that The Lucha Brothers will look to sign with WWE when they both become available, but it seems Fenix won’t be able to negotiate with any other companies for around another year. Despite this, it doesn’t appear as if AEW are preparing any creative plans for the former International Champion in the near future.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on Rey Fenix’s AEW contract status as soon as we hear more.
