Tony Khan reflects on the AEW women’s division in 2025.
Since AEW’s inception, a key talking point among fans has been the company’s women’s division, with many feeling as if the female talent haven’t always received a fair share of the spotlight in the promotion. However, with the addition of Mercedes Moné in 2024, the ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm character, and those who joined the roster earlier this year, the division has certainly progressed since 2019.
Speaking at the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door media scrum, Tony Khan emphasised the growth in quality of the women’s roster, saying they have more great rivalries and matches now than the last five years combined.
“The quality of the wrestlers is much better than when we started. The roster right now is ten times better than when we launched. I believe it’s the quality of the wrestling. That’s what I always said, as we build the quality of the roster and build the rivalries and great matches…this past year, we’ve had more great rivalries and matches in AEW women’s wrestling than maybe the past five years combined, which is pretty incredible. I’m very proud of them. It starts at the top with the champions.”
-Tony Khan
Just this year, AEW Women’s World Champion Toni Storm has stood across the ring from Mariah May, TBS Champion Mercedes Moné and ROH Women’s World Champion Athena. Fans have also enjoyed the intense feud between Thekla and Queen Aminata which has been ongoing since June.
While female talent are still yet to close an AEW pay-per-view, Tony Khan noted eksewjere in the scrum that a rematch between Storm and Moné would be a ‘fantastic main event match on any major show’.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on the AEW women’s division as soon as we hear more.
