The Last Time is almost here.

On September 5th, WrestleVotes revealed that John Cena’s final match is set for Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13th at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC, with reports indicating that the match was originally set for Boston, Massachusetts We now have more on why the decision was made to change those plans.

According to Dave Meltzer within the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the decision for Cena’s final match to take place in Washington, DC was a financial one, with Boston deeming the site fee that WWE were demanding to be too high to justify.

“The decision to go to Washington, DC, was said to be financial from those with knowledge of the talks with Boston. WWE had asked for a site fee from Boston that was said to be similar to the $7 million that New Jersey paid for two nights of SummerSlam. Those with the city of Boston felt that number was too high, citing that they didn’t believe less than two weeks before Christmas that such a show in an arena would generate anywhere near the level of tourism to justify the cost. The reports were that it wasn’t that level in just cash, but a figure in that range for the value of everything the city would provide that WWE was looking for.”

With this change in location, John Cena’s final show in Boston will now take place on November 10th, whilst his final show at Madison Square Garden will be on November 17th.

In terms of what’s next for Cena as his retirement approaches, the former WWE Champion is set to face Brock Lesnar at Wrestlepalooza in Indianapolis on September 20th, with the show also featuring the in-ring return of AJ Lee.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on John Cena’s retirement tour as soon as we hear more.
