The finish of Wrestlepalooza’s opening match was reportedly not changed.
At this past weekend’s Wrestlepalooza Premium Live Event, Brock Lesnar secured a dominant victory over John Cena on the 17-time world champion’s retirement tour. However, the days that followed, it was reported that the finish of the match had been changed on the day, with original plans seeing Cena get the win. Now, an update has emerged suggesting that isn’t the case.
Per Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it’s believed that Lesnar, having been brought in to look dominant, was never scheduled to lose to Cena at Wrestlepalooza.
“It was said that the story that the John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar finish was changed was not true, and that Brock Lesnar was not brought back to lose his first match. There are always discussions and the idea may have been broached for Cena to win, as most expected, but it was never a serious discussion or ever the planned finish. The match was all about making Lesnar as strong as possible, getting a last match with Cena, and the feeling Cena more than anyone, is bullet proof no matter what they do with him. WWE are spending a ton to get Lesnar and the idea is to make him a monster and have someone slay the monster.”

From here, the company may look to set up a rematch in which Cena exacts revenge on ‘The Beast Incarnate’, however, with less than five free dates left on the retirement tour, whether that happens remains to be seen. Up next for Cena is AJ Styles, with the pair set to renew their iconic rivalry one last time at Crown Jewel in Perth on October 11.
As for what’s next for Lesnar, recent reports have indicated that he’s pencilled in for some major events in 2026. You can read more about that here.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on the original plans for Wrestlepalooza as soon as we hear more.
