Matt Jackson details talks with Triple H in 2018.

Back in 2018, the wrestling world saw an unlikely gaming crossover when The Elite took on The New Day at Street Fighter V during E3. Interestingly, their clash was picked up by WWE.com, and footage was even uploaded to UpUpDownDown despite Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks still being members of the New Japan Pro Wrestling roster at the time, leading many to wonder whether the company could potentially come to an agreement for the trios to meet in a wrestling match either in WWE or elsewhere. Now, one-half of The Young Bucks has detailed trying to make the match happen.

Speaking on Being The Elite, Matt Jackson looked back on The New Day and The Elite pushing to make a match happen, including talking to Triple H.

“We truly were trying to get a New Day, Young Bucks, Kenny match to happen. An Elite vs. New Day match actively. They said they were trying on their side. We were definitely talking to our bosses. Even to the point in 2018 when we got on the phone with Triple H and we talked to him and said, ‘Hey, we would really like to do this match.’ I don’t know if he was necessarily interested in just doing that match. I think he was more interested in pursuing us to work for him, but we talked to him about it.We were serious about doing the match and we thought we’d probably be able to do it, and unfortunately we never did.”

The Elite and The New Day were two of the industry’s hottest acts in 2018, with Big E, Kingston, and Woods being cornerstones of WWE’s tag team division while the momentum built up by Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks as part of Bullet Club led to the formation of All Elite Wrestling the following January.

For years, a match between the two teams seemed impossible, though Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods’ recent stunning departure from WWE has opened up the possibility that they could meet down the line, albeit with Big E unable to compete. In fact, shortly after the pair’s WWE exit, ‘major AEW talent’ were reportedly pushing for the company to sign the team. You can read more about that here.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on both The New Day and The Elite as soon as we hear more.
