Cain Velasquez Would Reportedly Have Returned To AAA If WWE Didn’t Own Them

Cain Velasquez reportedly doesn’t fit in with WWE’s vision for AAA.
When Cain Velasquiz first ventured into the world of professional wrestling, AAA was his home. The two matches he had there received positive reviews from most, particularly as the MMA star integrated moves associated with the lucha libre style into his offence. However, the Mexican star hasn’t been back since it was acquired by WWE in 2025, and it’s now been suggested that’s down to the new ownership.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said Cain Velasquez would be working in AAA now if not for WWE’s purchase of the company last year.
“If WWE had not bought AAA, he would already be wrestling for AAA. They didn’t leave on the best of terms. I don’t think WWE really wants him in the sense of what their goals are. Their goals aren’t like, let’s bring in a Mexican celebrity. The AAA people, Dorian Roldan, Konnan, those people that were involved, they love Cain Velasquez. I was pretty much told that if it was Dorian’s company, then they would have definitely brought Cain in for big shows because that’s how much they think of him.”

Velazquez’s impressive performances with AAA led him to signing with WWE in 2019, though he was under contract there for less than a year. His only broadcasted match came against Brock Lesnar, as the pair clashed over the WWE Championship at Crown Jewel. After his sub-three minute loss to ‘The Beast Incarnate’, Velasquez wrestled at a live event in Mexico, but was ultimately released from his deal as part of budget cuts in April 2020.
His last wrestling appearance came for AAA in December 2022, and, for now, the 43-year-old’s future in professional wrestling remains unknown.
