AJ Styles: I Couldn’t Care Less About Wins And Losses, They Don’t Mean Anything

AJ Styles says wins and losses don’t matter.

Given the scripted nature of pro wrestling, many fans have differing opinions on how much whether or not a wrestler wins or loses matters in the long run. While, of course, wins can build momentum to propel them towards a title, many would argue that some major names are able to take losses and still feature in high-profile matches without taking much of a hit to their star power. Now, it seems one WWE Hall of Famer agrees that wins and losses in wrestling don’t matter.

Speaking on The Phenomenally Retro Podcast, AJ Styles gave his view that wins and losses don’t mean anything in wrestling.

“Sometimes you’re not the story in the match. You’re just in the match. And to tell you the truth, you probably wouldn’t remember whether or not I win or lost unless somebody went through and wrote it all down because it’s not that important. Guys win and lose all the time. So it’s best served where it’s at in the story. That’s what means the most to me. I couldn’t care less about wins and losses. They don’t mean anything. This is a show. This is pure entertainment. This isn’t the UFC. That’s the biggest difference. Definitely the older I got, my job wasn’t to be the heavyweight champion of the world. Some people want that. Some people need that. I didn’t. My job was to make sure I get the younger talent over as well, if I could. And if they were older, who cares? I had a job to do. Unless I had a better idea of how to do it, then there’s no point in saying anything. Do your job. I’m not as concerned with that as much as the fans were.”

As a two-time WWE Champion, Styles himself enjoyed plenty of success in WWE, being featured as one of their top stars since his debut in 2016. As such, ‘The Phenomenal One’ remained a credible threat to anyone on the roster regardless of whether he’d built up a streak of wins.

Of course, after a decade with WWE, Styles’ in-ring career came to a close when he lost to ‘The Ring General’ GUNTHER at the 2026 Royal Rumble. Since then, the 49-year-old has taken on a new role with the company, working as a talent scout looking to find the rising stars that could take RAW and SmackDown by storm in the future.

Before he officially called it a day, speculation mounted over whether Styles could’ve made a move to AEW. While that didn’t end up happening, he recently named which member of Tony Khan’s roster he’d have liked to face. You can read more about that here.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on AJ Styles as soon as we hear more.
