AJ Styles Thinks It’s Fair to Say WWE Dropped the Ball With GUNTHER
AJ Styles has reflected on GUNTHER’s trajectory since their match.
As of writing, it’s been almost since months since AJ Styles retired from the ring following a loss to GUNTHER at Royal Rumble on January 31. In his time with WWE, Styles was a two-time WWE Champion whilst also winning United States, Intercontinental, and Tag Team gold. However, looking back on his last match, Styles has lamented the company’s use of the man who retired him since January.
Speaking on his Phenomenally Retro podcast, Styles agreed with the suggestion that WWE have dropped the ball on GUNTHER.
“I can see where you’re coming from. I do, but what do we do? We can’t just have him retiring people. That’s not gonna work, but it’s always the chance that he could. I get it. I don’t know. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. I just don’t know what we’re trying to do. He can’t retire everybody he wrestles. It’s fair to say that [WWE dropped the ball]. The more I think about it, I’m like, ‘Oh, freak. Okay. Yeah, I guess.’ Kind of a big deal, getting rid of John Cena, right? I don’t know. I don’t write the stories.”

Following his retirement of Styles, GUNTHER has hovered around the main event picture, defeating Seth Rollins on the first night of WrestleMania 42 following interference from The Vision, before going on to unsuccessfully challenge Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship on two occasions. As for what’s next, ‘The Ring General’ will be taking on Nick Aldis at SummerSlam after tensions between them couldn’t be contained.
Since retiring from active competition, Styles has continued to work for WWE in a talent scout and coaching capacity. ‘The Phenomenal One’ had a storied career with the company, as well as making his name through iconic runs in TNA and NJPW.
