Tommaso Ciampa: A Lot Of People Counted Me Out Before AEW Title Match With Darby Allin
AEW’s Tommaso Ciampa reflects on his match with Darby Allin
On the April 22 edition of Dynamite, Tommaso Ciampa became the first man to step up to Darby Allin’s AEW World Championship. To close the show, the pair met in a bloody war, wrestling for around 18 minutes and only ending when the champion secured the Scorpion Death Lock. Undoubtably a highlight of both men’s AEW careers thus far, Ciampa has now revealed how he thinks the match may have impacted some fans’ perception of him.
In a recent interview with Justin Barrasso of Undisputed, Tommaso Ciampa expressed his view that people may have felt his best days were behind him before his recent match with Darby Allin for the AEW World Championship.
“There’s no better way to kick off what a Tommaso Ciampa world title run would look like than that Darby match. It was my love letter to pro wrestling. I knew what I wanted and expected it to be, but I think a lot of people maybe counted me out and thought my best days were behind me. It was very important for me to have that match with Darby and have it go as well as it did. The next time people see an AEW world title match with Tommaso Ciampa’s name linked to it, they’re going to know they’re in for something special.”

Ciampa has seen a resurgence to his singles career since joining AEW, starting when he won the TNT Championship in his very first match with the company. Although he only held the title for 11 days, ‘The Psycho Killer’ certainly established himself as a major force in the division, currently locking horns with Chris Jericho.
After he defeated Jericho on the ‘Beach Break’ edition of Dynamite, the 41-year-old will have another chance to test his skills against his rival on July 26 in a featured match at AEW Redemption. Hoping to claim another victory, Ciampa will this time have to contend with ‘The Painmaker’ in Montreal.
