Jeff Cobb Returns to NJPW, Joins Unbound Co.

Former NEVER Openweight Champion Jeff Cobb returned to New Japan Pro Wrestling on August 16th during the final night of the G1 Climax. Cobb arrived after the United Empire defeated Unbound Co. in an undercard trios match as Callum Newman continued to beat down Daiki Nagai after the match had ended.

Newman held up a samurai sword to Nagai’s neck while he was lying on the ground. Cobb was called by Gedo to come into the ring. Once he did, he made it clear that he was not there to help Newman. He shoulder checked the former IWGP Heavyweight Champion and exclaimed that he had joined Gedo in Unbound Co.

As shared by NJPW, Cobb explained his intentions once he made it to the back, wanting to target Newman going forward.

“I’ve come back to New Japan, where I can see real wrestling. And I intend to join Unbound Co. There’s nothing holding me back anymore. And right now, what I need to do is teach Calum a lesson—something your mom never got round to doing.”

The 44-year-old Cobb previously wrestled for many years with NJPW, debuting with the promotion in 2017. As a member of the roster for several years, Cobb instilled himself as one of the company’s most powerful and hard hitting members. He won the NEVER Openweight Championship on one occasion in 2019, the Television Title in 2024, and was a two-time IWGP Tag Team Champion as well, once with Great-O-Khan and once with Callum Newman.

Cobb last appeared for the promotion back in April of 2025 before making the jump to WWE, where he was saddled with the “J.C. Mateo” moniker and rarely had something to sink his teeth into.

Jeff Cobb is the second surprise acquisition NJPW has made this weekend. Earlier on Saturday, they added former Open the Dream Gate Champion Shun Skywalker, who joined House of Torture.
