Callum Newman And Will Ospreay Tension Escalates, Tag Title Match Announced For NJPW Power Struggle
Will Ospreay and Callum Newman are anything but united in their empire, but they’ll have to fight as one to win gold next month.
The King of Pro Wrestling event that New Japan just held was full of shocking moments and great matches, while also building up the future, as proven by the bubbling feud between Newman and Ospreay. These two have been going at it since the beginning of the year verbally, yet had each other’s backs when it came time to fight in the ring. Yet, during the Never Openweight 6-Man tag title match, things came to a head.
It was Ospreay, HENARE, and Great-O-Khan defending the titles against the Knockout Bros and former United Empire member Jeff Cobb. Early on, it was clear that Newman was willing to do anything to keep the belts in the Empire, much to the dismay of fellow member Francesca Akira.
Then, when the United Empire lost, “The Prince of Pace” pulled out the Sword of Essex to do some more damage to Unbound Co., which Ospreay took serious offense at.
Despite the loss, Ospreay was undeterred and challenged the Knockout Bros to a match for the IWGP Tag Team Championships at next month’s event, Power Struggle, in Hiroshima. The challenge was accepted, but with a catch: Callum Newman had to be Ospreay’s partner in the match.
Newman vs. Ospreay has been building up intensely for a while, especially since Will won the AEW World Title and started building his own branch of the United Empire in All Elite Wrestling. Callum even called out his own members of UE to pick a side in the conflict to come. If things go as expected, especially with other AEW members showing up at Ryogoku Sumo Hall to stake their claims for certain matches, we could see the two finally clash 1-on-1 at next year’s Wrestle Kingdom event, if not before.
Elsewhere on the show, former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega made his return to New Japan Pro Wrestling with the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in his sights. You can read more about that here.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on the tension between Will Ospreay and Callum Newman as soon as we hear more.
