AJ Styles trusts John Cena between the ropes.

On October 11 at WWE’s Crown Jewel: Perth, AJ Styles faced John Cena as part of the latter’s ongoing retirement tour. The bout marked the fifth singles meeting between the two, with their first clash having taken place at Money in the Bank 2016.

Speaking to Justin Barrasso of the Boston Herald, Styles reflected on the match and revealed that there may not be another wrestler in the world he trusts more in the ring than John Cena.

“I’m not sure there is anyone in the ring I trust more than John Cena. He’s incredible at understanding what the fans need when they need it. He’s even more incredible with the way he treats people. During our match at Crown Jewel, which is the last time we’ll ever wrestle each other, I was in the moment. I embraced and enjoyed it – I mean, it’s hard not to love what you do when you’re having so much fun doing it. People might be surprised to hear this, but for John and myself, it was another match until it was over. Afterward, we were able to reflect on its significance. In the moment, we were doing what we do to entertain people.”

Whilst Cena walked away with the victory, both men received praise from fans and critics alike for the bout, which featured several tributes to some of their most iconic opponents, including Christopher Daniels, Randy Orton, and Bray Wyatt.

“We’ve been doing this for decades, this is what we do. The greatest part is it meant a lot to a lot of people. We wanted to give wrestling fans something special, and I think we accomplished that.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Styles revealed that John Cena’s written introduction for him at Crown Jewel caught him off guard. You can read more about that here.

Styles also recently shared his plans to bring his own in-ring career to an end in 2026. You can read more about that here.

Last night’s episode of RAW saw AJ Styles and Dragon Lee defeat Finn Bálor and JD McDonagh of The Judgement Day to capture the World Tag Team Championship.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on future plans for AJ Styles as soon as we hear more.
