The AEW tag title tournament not including Blackpool Combat Club is reportedly just a company decision.

As a result of Sting and Darby Allin’s victory over The Young Bucks in The Icon’s last match, the AEW World Tag Team Championships were vacated. Shortly after, a tournament was set up featuring the likes of FTR and The Bucks to determine new champions, however, looking through the field of competitors, fans noticed the Blackpool Combat Club’s absence among the contenders.

On the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez wondered whether Moxley and Castagnoli’s absence was down to AEW not wanting to lose before his NJPW match with Tetsuya Naito at Windy City Riot. Dave Meltzer then responded by saying that he was told that the two things are unrelated and that there was no given reason as to why Moxley and Claudio were excluded from the tournament.

“I’ve actually asked about that and one thing has nothing to do with the other… I specifically asked why they weren’t in and there was like no reason. And again even if they were in the tournament or whatever like that you could still beat Claudio. They didn’t put them in for whatever reason they didn’t put them in.”

Jon Moxley is set to battle current IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Tetsuya Naito in Chicago at Windy City Riot in Chicago on April 12. As for the tag tournament, new AEW World Tag Team Champions will be crowned on April 21 at the newly added Dynasty pay-per-view.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on the plans for the Blackpool Combat Club as soon as we hear more.
