Blake Monroe Says Storytelling Is The Most Important Part Of Wrestling

Blake Monroe weighs in on whether storytelling is the most important thing in wrestling.
For years, wrestling fans have debated whether either storytelling or in-ring action is more important to pro wrestling as a whole. While many would argue that it’s impossible to have one without the other and that storytelling can be done during a match, the two are often lauded as separate entities with some viewers having a preference for one over the other. Now, an NXT star has weighed in on the debate.
Speaking with Jeremy Housewright, Blake Monroe discussed her belief that storytelling is the most important thing in wrestling.
“I think you can steal the show with a story. If you look at my career and my career highlights, I think all of them have come from a story, and I think I’m a fantastic wrestler in the ring. I don’t do 25 Moonsaults or deathdefying stunts, but when I go out there, I give 110% in what I do, and I feel like my in-ring marries my character perfectly. I just think the most important part of wrestling is telling a story. If you think about the people on top right now and the WrestleMania main events we’ve had recently in the past 10 years. Cody [Rhodes] and Roman [Reigns], that was like a two-year long epic. It was incredible. If you look at John Cena, when I grew up, the stories I would watch. Like when Jeff Hardy finally won the World Title. Those are the moments you remember. It’s the stories. Nobody cares if you can do some gymnastics. At least I don’t.”

Monroe herself is someone who has taken part in some of the most memorable storylines in recent times. While her ‘Woman From Hell’ persons has applied well since her arrival in NXT, it was through her time in AEW that the Brit was able to best show her narrative skills.
Under the name Mariah May, the 27-year-old was part of a storyline with Toni Storm which spanned years of programming and included a heel turn which led May to the Women’s World Championship at All In 2024. Ultimately, both match quality and gripping storylines are essential parts of wrestling, with one unlikely to stand out without the other.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on Blake Monroe as soon as we hear more.
