Chris Masters has revealed he was meant to win WWE gold.

A familiar name to those watching in the mid-2000s and early 2010s, Chris Masters had two stints with WWE between 2003 and 2011. However, despite contenting for gold and even challenging for the WWE Championship, ‘The Masterpiece’ was never able to win a title in the company. Now, the 43-year-old has revealed scrapped plans which would’ve seen him win both singles and tag team championships.

Speaking with Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Masters revealed he meant to win the Tag Team Championships with Carlito at WrestleMania 22, as well as once being set to become Intercontinental Champion.

“Carlito and me were supposed to win [the Tag Titles] at WrestleMania [22], but it literally got switched like the day before. We were penciled in to win it. But then Carlito, they wanted him to turn baby and The Spirit Squad, they kind of wanted to get the belts on them somehow, to give them some steam, so that was that. Then the Intercontinental Title, I was actually supposed to win that, but it was the same point where they had given me an intervention for my prescription painkiller abuse at the time. They even told me, I remember having the meeting with Johnny [Ace] because there was a Four Way Match that night. It was in Vegas for the Intercontinental Title that I was slated to win. But then they caught wind that I had the issues I had, and I had an intervention, and basically told me you’re going to rehab. I screwed that. So Tag belts, I had no control over, that just happened. IC, I f’d up.”

As mentioned, Masters’ first run in WWE was hampered by an ongoing issue relating to prescription drugs. The star had to take time off to attend rehab in May 2006, and, although he was able to return to the company months later, was ultimately let go upon failing the Substance Abuse and Drug Policy for a second time.

Still, after two years away, Masters re-signed with WWE in 2009, sticking with the company until 2011. He then re-emerged on the independent scene, continuing to stay active to this day. Most recently, he appeared at MCW Spring Fever where he teamed with Carlito and Ken Dixon to secure the win in trios action.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on Chris Masters’ scrapped WWE plans as soon as we hear more.
