Drew McIntyre reportedly didn’t know he’d win the Undisputed WWE Championship until hours before the match.

Last night, on the January 9 edition of Friday Night SmackDown, Cody Rhodes put the Undisputed WWE Championship on the line against Drew McIntyre in a Three Stages of Hell match. To many people’s surprise, it was ‘The Scottish Psychopath’ who walked out with the title, escaping the cage after Jacob Fatu’s attempt to cost McIntyre the gold backfired. Now, an update has emerged on when the competitors found out about the finish.

According to a new update from Bodyslam, it’s believed Rhodes and McIntyre weren’t informed of the finish until hours before the match, with the report noting that WWE went with a title change in order to take a different approach to the road to WrestleMania.

The talent involved in the Three Stages of Hell Match weren’t informed of the direction WWE was going for the finish until a few hours prior to the match. There were a few different pitches but they ultimately went with Drew McIntyre becoming champion with the accidental help of Jacob Fatu. WWE is looking to have a different approach to the Road to WrestleMania this year and crowning McIntyre opens up a few different stories leading to Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, and WrestleMania.

On last night’s show, the company announced that a Fatal Four Way will take place at Saturday Night’s Main Event to crown a number one contender for the Undisputed WWE Championship. With qualifying matches still to take place, names like Randy Orton, Sami Zayn, and Solo Sikoa are among those looking to contend for McIntyre’s gold at the Royal Rumble.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on Drew McIntyre’s Undisputed WWE Championship win as soon as we hear more.
