There is a new Mexican National Heavyweight Champion in CMLL.

During CMLL’s show on Tuesday evening in Arena Mexico, Esfinge defeated Akuma to win the Mexican National Heavyweight Championship, the secondary title in the Mexican promotion’s heavyweight division.

The 33-year-old defeated the defending champion in a match that lasted 10:50. This is his first heavyweight singles title of his career and his first singles belt of any kind since he held the Mexican National Light Heavyweight Championship until last month. His reign with the heavyweight title is 72nd in the belt’s history.

The Mexican National Heavyweight Championship was first made an official title sanctioned by CMLL shortly after the promotion was conceived in 1933. Even before, it’s reported that the title existed as far back as 1926.

Some of the most famous heavyweight luchadors in history have held this title including Firpo Segura, Médico Asesino, Cien Caras, Rayo de Jalisco Jr., and Pierrot Jr.

A few years after its creation, the belt was brought to AAA, where it remained until 2013. Some of the legends who’ve held it during that period include Màscara Sagrada, Cibernético, Latin Lover, and Héctor Garza.

When it came back to CMLL in 2017, the belt took its position as the secondary heavyweight belt because by then CMLL had created a new line of belts.

Before Esfinge took the belt on Tuesday, Akuma held the title for 579 days and defended it twice before against Volcano and Blue Panther Jr.
