Goldberg says Triple H approached him about having a retirement match in 2025.
Last November, Goldberg revealed that he will have his WWE retirement match at some point this year. While it wasn’t clear exactly when in 2025 the 58-year-old plans to step into the ring for the final time, he said last month that he has a match planned for sometime this summer after getting stem cell treatment, and, with all roads leading to Goldberg’s retirement match, the former WCW World Heavyweight Championship has discussed how his impending WWE retirement match came to be.
Speaking on the Ariel Helwani Show, Goldberg said he was never going to beg WWE for another match, but Triple H approached him with regard to one last outing in the ring.
“I don’t beg. I’m never going to do that. “I was lucky enough one day to be on my tractor here, on the property, cutting the grass, and I get a phone call from Hunter [Triple H]. I was astonished. I hung up the first time because I didn’t know who it was. Once we had the conversation, I was extremely appreciative and honored that he would think of me. It was an interview that I did that he saw where I said I thought I was owed a retirement match and if I would still be up for that, and maybe let’s talk. It’s a testament to something I did in the past because I deserve that kind of respect. We all know it’s a business decision at the end of the day. To what degree, nobody knows. I do believe that he was speaking from the heart and he thought if it’s something that I wanted, that I deserve it. It took them that long to call me. I wasn’t going to [beg for] it. I don’t work like that. If I had to go down like I went down in Saudi, then so be it,”
-Goldberg
As yet, it’s unknown who Goldberg will face in his last match although he had a confrontation with current WWE World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER at Bad Blood, suggesting it may be ‘The Ring General’ in the legend’s future. Goldberg hasn’t competed since he lost to Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber 2022 in Saudi Arabia.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on Goldberg’s WWE retirement match as soon as we hear more.
