Cody Rhodes is set to challenge for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championships in Los Angeles at WrestleMania 39 following his Royal Rumble win. He made his WWE return at January 28’s 30-man spectacle following an eight-month spell on the sidelines with a torn pec injury. As of now, Roman Reigns awaits Rhodes come the first weekend in April but Saturday’s Elimination Chamber event will go a long way towards shaping The Show Of Shows.
Although Rhodes was ultimately victorious in San Antonio, his final hurdle in the Rumble match was The Ring General Gunther. The Austrian star had been in the ring since the start, coming in an number one, but ended up being thrown out by The American Nightmare who came in as the last entrant.
Speaking on WWE After The Bell, Gunther had his say on whether a potential showdown with Rhodes is on the cards for the future, with the Intercontinental Champion stating that Cody is a perfect opponent for him.
“Obviously, it does. When I knew that scenario would go down with me and Cody at the end, I knew he was out for a little bit, and since then I was able to work my way up and I had to introduce him to the new reality. That was my attitude going into it. Obviously, that was just a taste for everybody. Cody is one of those guys where, that’s a perfect match for me. Perfect opposites, if that makes sense. The match is right there whenever it needs to happen. If it happens in Europe, that would be fantastic,”
-Gunther.
Many will feel as if a clash between the two is inevitable given their respective finishing positions in the Royal Rumble match, but both stars are occupied heading into WrestleMania season. It’s unclear what The Ring General will be doing at ‘Mania but his next championship defence comes on tonight’s edition of SmackDown against Madcap Moss.
As always, we’ll aim to update you on the futures of both Cody and Gunther as well as a potential match between the pair as soon as we hear more.
