Could GUNTHER face John Cena before the end of 2025?

When John Cena began his retirement tour at the start of 2025, many fans wanted to see him take on ‘The Ring General’ GUNTHER – albeit with the then 16-time world champion taking on RAW’s World Heavyweight Champion in search of his 17th title. With Cena now the Undisputed WWE Champion on SmackDown, a match between the two currently looks unlikely, though it now seems the Austrian star hasn’t given up on the idea of facing the legend before the curtain falls later this year.

In an interview with RadioTimes, GUNTHER praised Cena for going out on his own terms. Interestingly, he emphasised how much time was left and said they may have the chance to wrestle each other before the end of 2025.

“It’s great for him that he’s able to do that and say, ‘This is the way I want to finish it and the way I want to go out.’ It’s a great way to do it. If somebody deserves it, then it’s him. It’s good to have him back around. Obviously, I have not interacted with him or seen him much because he’s on SmackDown mostly, but who knows, there’s still a long time left, so maybe there’s a chance to get in there with him before he hangs it up. He’s a guy that everyone knows, it’s like what Hogan was in the ’90s. If you know wrestling, you know John Cena. It also shows the love and passion that he has for the business. He doesn’t need to do it, he’s financially got bigger fish to fry with his movies and he’s a made man already, so there’s no pressure for him to do all of that, but he decided to invest a whole year into this. It’s a very classy way for someone like him to go out and have this one year of giving back and do it one more time.”

Whether GUNTHER is able to stand across the ring from Cena remains to be seen, but many believe that the current Undisputed WWE Champion won’t remain a heel for the entirety of his final run, so the stars may align for their match in the near future.

Elsewhere in the interview, GUNTHER looked ahead to his World Heavyweight Championship defence against CM Punk, calling ‘The Second City Saint’ one of the most unique performers the wrestling business has ever seen.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on GUNTHER’s future plans as soon as we hear more.
