‘The Genius of the Sky’ is enjoying the support of the WWE Universe.
Since her babyface turn last summer, IYO SKY has rapidly become one of WWE’s most popular stars, with her signature emote earning huge ovations from the crowd each week.
In a interview with ComicBook ahead of WWE’s Wrestlepalooza, IYO SKY was asked about what she’d learned during her time in NXT and on WWE’s main roster, to which she noted that she’s better enjoying her wrestling as a babyface.
“When I was in NXT, most of the time I was as a heel. But now I am a babyface, and I’m always smiling. I’m pointing my face and screaming, and I’m so much better enjoying this way to wrestling, so yeah.”

IYO went on to clarify that she prefers being a babyface to being a heel, once again emphasising that the role allows her to always keep smiling in the ring.
“Yeah because I could smiling in the ring because as a heel I have to always keep like a grumpy face or you know scary face during the match so now I’m smiling as a natural.”

In NXT, the then-Io Shirai spent most of her run as a heel. After moving to the main roster in 2022 as IYO SKY, she aligned with Bayley and Dakota Kai in the villainous Damage CTRL, though the remnants of the faction completed a babyface turn last summer.
IYO SKY will team with former rival Rhea Ripley at Crown Jewel: Perth on October 11 to face Asuka and Kairi Sane, after The Kabuki Warriors turned on their former ally during the September 22 edition of Monday Night RAW.
ComicBook also had the chance to speak to former WWE Champion Big E, who labelled the feud as the company’s most compelling storyline today. You can read more about that here.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on future plans for IYO SKY as soon as we hear more.
