John Cena has shed some light on his heel turn.
At Elimination Chamber 2025, John Cena shocked the world by turning heel, aligning with The Rock and Travis Scott. However, as the year went on, many fans as of the star’s time as a villain often felt lacklustre. Particularly when ‘The Final Boss’ was absent from key moments of Cena’s heel run, viewers wondered what the initial plans had been. Now, the 17-time world champion has explained why WWE decided to pull the trigger on the turn.
Speaking with Chris Van Vliet on Insight, John Cena revealed WWE primarily wanted to shock people with his heel turn, doing something to make Elimination Chamber a bigger show.
“That stuff you see on Unreal is real. Like, ‘We need to make Chamber big, so let’s do something that’ll shock everybody. Hey man, we got this idea.’ No problem. I’ll do the best I can with it.”

After a mixed run as a heel, Cena surprised many by switching back to being a babyface on the SmackDown before SummerSlam 2025. Since losing the Undisputed WWE Championship back to Cody Rhodes, the star finally captured the Intercontinental Championship, and he’s set to take on GUNTHER in his final match this Saturday in Washington, DC.
Elsewhere in the interview, Cena revealed that one of his biggest rivals told him he doesn’t want a retirement tour. You can read more about that here.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on John Cena’s heel turn as soon as we hear more.
