John Cena vs AJ Styles wasn’t the original plan.

With around 5 dates left on John Cena’s retirement tour, there isn’t long left for fans to see the 17-time world champion compete in the ring. This year, the star has revisited his past feuds with both Randy Orton and CM Punk, and one name that a large section of fans still want to see Cena wrestle one last time is ‘The Phenomenal’ AJ Styles. Earlier today, the pair even took to X, with both men expressing eagerness to square off once more before the end of the year.

Per Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, it’s believed that Cena vs Styles wasn’t the original plan.

“Originally, that (John Cena vs. AJ Styles) was not the plan, but there are a lot of people who want to see it and he (Cena) probably wants to do it. If he wants to do it, it’s going to get done.”

-Dave Meltzer

The pair have had four singles matches, including an incredibly memorable battle for the WWE Championship at the 2017 Royal Rumble. However, they haven’t met one on one since the February 27, 2018, edition of SmackDown, and it now appears as if they’re likely to clash one more time before Cena retires this December.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on the plans for John Cena’s retirement tour as soon as we hear more.
