Records are made to be broken.

Night Two of WrestleMania 41 saw John Cena defeat Cody Rhodes to capture the WWE Championship, officially breaking Ric Flair’s record as he began his seventeenth reign as a world champion.

Speaking to Chris Van Vliet on Insight, John Cena said he wants to see someone eventually break his record and reach eighteen world championship reigns so that he can personally congratulate them.

“How do I make these moments more meaningful? I want to win 17 so I can shake the hand of the performer that wins 18. So what it meant to me personally was like, hey, youngins, one of them is going to be you. You better get working because I don’t want to be in the ground when 18 happens. I want to shake somebody’s hand, and something that’s impossible is now possible.”

-John Cena

John Cena’s legendary WWE career will come to an end on December 13 at Saturday Night’s Main Event at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C., where he will face former World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER.

With fourteen reigns to his name, Randy Orton is the closest active WWE Superstar to surpassing Cena, although with NXT talent set to be showcased at Saturday Night’s Main Event, perhaps one of the company’s rising stars will one day achieve the impossible.

Elsewhere in the interview, Cena declined to dwell on the past when asked about the original plans for The Rock and Travis Scott following his heel turn. You can read more about that here.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on future world championship plans in WWE as soon as we hear more.
