More has emerged regarding the situation between AEW and Rey Fenix.
Just a few days ago, Rey Fenix surprised fans by making a series of social media posts indirectly aimed at AEW in which he accused the company of ‘inhumane’ treatment, including allegedly being ignored when he needed a doctor. Now, an update has surfaced regarding the situation between the company and the former World Tag Team Champion.
Per Fightful Select, an AEW source has indicated that they hadn’t heard of anything ‘inhumane’ between Fenix and the company, although there had been some longstanding communication issues as well as the 33-year-old previously taking issue with a doctor who wouldn’t clear him.
“One source admitted there have long been communication issues, but hadn’t heard anything that would be construed as “inhumane,” and hadn’t spoken to Fenix about it. They had heard that Fenix took issue with a doctor who hadn’t cleared him at one point, though context on that wasn’t exactly complete.”

Fenix’s AEW contract is widely believed to run until well into 2025, with Dave Meltzer reporting earlier today that the company have tacked on a year of injury time to his deal, but Fightful go on to note that a source indicated Tony Khan could give the former International Champion an early release. However, this hasn’t yet materialised and any decision could set a precedent for the future.
“As of now, Fenix’s status is up in the air, and there were people within AEW that indicated to Fightful last week that AEW and Tony Khan might actually give Fenix an early release on his deal. However, since then, we’ve heard of no update, and one of the sources that indicated that believed almost any outcome sets an unfortunate precedent.”

While it seems as if Fenix will be tied to AEW for a while longer, his brother and tag team partner Penta recently became a free agent and can now take bookings from any company. For now, the situation remains complicated, but it’s still expected that The Lucha Brothers will reunite outside of AEW and eventually have a run in WWE when they’re both available.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on Rey Fenix’s AEW status as soon as we hear more.
