On July 2nd, Liv Morgan shocked the wrestling world by capturing the Money in the Bank briefcase in the show’s opening match, before cashing in her title opportunity later that same night on Ronda Rousey to capture her first ever Smackdown Women’s Championship.

Many had been clamouring for Morgan to finally have her moment as champion in WWE for some time now, but according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the decision to push Morgan ultimately came down to the absence of Sasha Banks and Naomi, both of whom are indefinitely suspended (and have potentially been released) due to the pair walking out of an episode of Raw in May of this year.

“Part of the reason, if not the key reason, for the recent push of Morgan was the walking out of Banks and Naomi. When they left, the idea was that Smackdown needed a new top tier woman babyface and Morgan was the one who got the pick of the draw.”

Morgan is now set to defend her newly won Smackdown Women’s Championship at SummerSlam against the woman she cashed in on to win the gold, Ronda Rousey. Despite the seemingly fortuitous nature of her recent push, the WWE Universe are absolutely behind Liv Morgan as champion, and we certainly hope that she enjoys a much deserved lengthy reign on top.
