MJF is believed to have pushed for his match with Kenny Omega to take place on AEW TV.

When it became clear that Kenny Omega was eyeing up another shot at MJF’s AEW World Championship, many assumed their match would take place at the aptly named ‘Redemption’ pay-per-view after ‘The Best Bout Machine’ lost his opportunity at the gold back at Dynasty. However, the match was set for this past week’s ’Beach Break’ edition of Dynamite, ending with Omega becoming champion for the second time. Now, an update has emerged on why their third encounter took place on July 8.

According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it’s believed MJF pushed for the match to be moved to TV.

“MJF vs Kenny Omega was pushed, believed to be by MJF, to be moved to television. I was not given a reason why, but it doesn’t matter where the suggestion came from, that’s a major change and Tony Khan approved of it. So he must feel he’s got something PPV worthy for Montreal on 7/26.”

Omega’s win brought MJF’s third reign as AEW World Champion to an end at just 45 days. In total, the company’s top prize has now changed hands three times since the turn of the year, with Darby Allin holding the title from Spring BreakThru to Double Or Nothing.

As yet, little is known about the current plans for the AEW World Championship at Redemption, although the title change now means the main event of All In at Wembley Stadium is currently set to be Kenny Omega vs. Will Ospreay, while MJF is left without a clear path to the show.
