WWE’s signing of Necro Butcher is partly for the video games

Last week, independent wrestling fans of the 2000s were surprised by the announcement that deathmatch icon Necro Butcher had signed with WWE on a Legends deal. The news was a shock for many reasons, such as Necro’s gory wrestling style and that he has never competed for WWE or any of his subsidiaries or affiliates. However, it seems one major goal of the signing was in the digital realm.

According to Mike Johnson from PWInsider, the aim of this deal is to bolster the roster for the next iteration of the WWE 2K video game series.

“A big part of the reason Necro Butcher was signed to a WWE Legends deal was to pave the way for his inclusion in future WWE video games. After New Jack’s inclusion in WWE 2K26 received such a big response from fans, Nick Khan pushed for Necro, given his hardcore reputation, for the next iteration of the game.”

Necro Butcher is best known for his work across the American indies in the 2000s, most notably in ROH and CZW. His match with Samoa Joe is infamous amongst fans of the time, whilst Necro was also a member of The Age of the Fall alongside current WWE star Seth Rollins. Necro Butcher also appeared in the 2008 film The Wrestler, starring Mickey Rourke, where they take part in a deathmatch.

Necro Butcher has been controversial amongst wrestling fans due to renaming himself MAGA Butcher for a stint in 2023.
