Rob Van Dam almost got involved with John Cena’s retirement tour.
With just a few dates remaining before the curtain falls on John Cena’s career this December, fans have seen the legend have one last showdown with rivals such as Randy Orton and CM Punk. While there are still many active wrestlers and former foes that fans want to see Cena come up against before the end of the year, there’s now been an update on a match WWE were looking to set up if not for injury.
Speaking to TMZSports, Rob Van Dam revealed that he was in talks with WWE before he suffered a double heel fracture in April of this year.
“Let me tell you this, I wanted to be one of the return matches for John Cena and his retirement tour. I was talking to them. There was a lot of interest; without giving away too many details, we were probably going to do it. Then I broke my heels.”

Van Dam and Cena had their most famous encounter at One Night Stand in 2006. There, the ravenous ECW crowd came unglued when their hardcore hero won the WWE Championship from the now 17-time world champion. Unfortunately, it seems as if there won’t be another chapter in their epic rivalry.
The 54-year-old’s injury happened while wrestling for MLW in what was Van Dam’s first in-ring appearance since his win on AEW Rampage back in April 2024.
