Roman Reigns vs Cody Rhodes reportedly may not be on the cards for WrestleMania 42.
Particularly coming out of Survivor Series in San Diego, it seemed as if WWE were setting up a third encounter between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns, likely for WrestleMania 42. However, Drew McIntyre’s surprising capture of the Undisputed WWE Championship this past Friday on SmackDown has cast doubt over the company’s main event scene heading into WrestleMania season. Now, an update has emerged suggesting WWE may have veered away from what they had originally planned.
According to a new update from Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, it’s believed that WrestleMania plans shifted when WWE made the call to have Drew McIntyre defeat Cody Rhodes. As it result, it was said that Rhodes vs Roman Reigns is now unlikely to happen.
“This whole WrestleMania changed on Wednesday of last week which was when they made the decision to go with the McIntyre title win. That wasn’t decided until Wednesday… and I don’t know what the new matches are, but they may be doing a three way with McIntyre, Jacob Fatu, and Cody Rhodes. That may not necessarily be at Mania, and that’s not even 100 per cent, but I was told that’s kind of like a possibility. But the Cody Rhodes / Roman Reigns thing is probably not happening. But whatever it is, the Mania plans were changed on Wednesday when they made the decision to change the championship.”

As yet, the WrestleMania plans for the new Undisputed WWE Champion Drew McIntyre are unknown, although the Scotsman still has the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber to navigate before the ‘Show Of Shows’ rolls around. While his next challenger hasn’t been decided, a tournament will get underway on this week’s SmackDown, with names like Sami Zayn, Trick Williams and Randy Orton among those hoping to advance to the four-way at Saturday Night’s Main Event and earn a shot at McIntyre’s gold in Saudi Arabia.
On the topic of McIntyre’s title win, it was recently revealed that both champion and challenger found out the finish of last Friday’s match on short notice. You can read more about that here.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any updates on WWE’s plans for WrestleMania 42 as soon as we hear more.
