Stephanie Vaquer Wins WWE Women’s World Championship At Chile Live Event

Stephanie Vaquer is the new WWE Women’s World Champion.

In recent weeks, both Stephanie Vaquer and Becky Lynch have been gunning for Liv Morgan’s Women’s World Championship. However, when Morgan pinned Vaquer this past Monday on RAW, it seemed as if her chance to reclaim the gold had passed her by for the time being. Yet, “La Primera” now finds herself as a two-time champion.

On September 12, at a live event taking place in her home country of Chile, Stephanie Vaquer took on Liv Morgan with Becky Lynch as the special guest referee. While championship matches are standard for live events, it’s safe to say those in attendance never normally expect to witness a title change. But, when Morgan got physical with Lynch, the special guest referee refused to count a pinfall which would’ve seen the champion retain, creating an opening for Vaquer’s shock win. The win marks the first time a women’s title has changed hands at a live event since Mickie James won the WWE Women’s Championship at a house show in Paris, dethroning Melina in a triple threat match also involving Victoria in April 2007. However, James would go on to lose the gold back to Melina before the night was over.

In terms of live event title changes, other recent examples include when AJ Styles won the United States Championship from Kevin Owens at a non-televised Madison Square Garden event in 2017, and Samoa Joe’s shock NXT Championship win over Finn Bálor at a house show in April 2016.

Last night’s result ends Liv Morgan’s third reign with the title at 147 days. The former champion only notched two successful defences since her victory at WrestleMania 42, and attention now turns to how she responds to her loss as Vaquer’s second stint with the Women’s World Championship begins.
