Toni Storm reflects on her time in WWE.

In May 2018, around one year after competing in the first Mae Young Classic, Toni Storm was officially signed to WWE. Spending three years with the company, the highlight of Storm’s run was a lengthy reign as NXT UK Women’s Champion, but, after a less than ideal run on the main roster, she asked for and was granted her release in December 2021. Now, Storm has reflected on her time with WWE.

Appearing on the Marking Out podcast, Storm was asked about creative control in WWE, saying she had complete creative freedom and wasn’t told how to perform her role.

“Well here’s the thing, this is where I get stuck on it. If the WWE- I don’t think I was told what to do enough. I wasn’t told to do anything actually. I wasn’t told like, I mean, obviously you were told what to do under certain circumstance. But overall like, I don’t feel like I was told what to do enough. I was very lost. I mean like I knew there was direction in things like ‘this is how you do it, this is what you do on television, cameras.’ As in regards to a character? No, I was never like, I mean they write promos but like I was- I just did it. Wasn’t really told “do this, today you’re a cat and your names Tori bloody Smith. No one told me anything and I kept my name the whole time and it was like I had complete creative freedom to be honest, some where others didn’t and others were given things. It’s so much so a very difficult thing to grasp.”

Storm went on to say that she would have run with anything WWE had given her, no matter how off the wall.

“I wish they would, I would have done anything to be honest. That’s the weird thing about this if they had just given me some mad off the wall thing, I would have 100% gone with it. This is like therapy!”

These days, there are few bigger stars in All Elite Wrestling than ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm. The 29-year-old is currently 205 days into her fourth reign as the AEW Women’s World Champion, with her next defence coming on September 20 at All Out. In Toronto, Storm will defend her title in four-way match as Kris Statlander, Jamie Hayter and Thekla all vie for the gold.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on Toni Storm as soon as we hear more.
