AEW Grand Slam Australia was always pencilled in to be a TV show, according to Tony Khan
Set for February 15, AEW Grand Slam Australia is the company’s first venture to Oceania in what will be a landmark show for Tony Khan and All Elite Wrestling. However, the logistics behind the event have confused many in the months leading up to the show. Initially, it was set to take place at the Suncorp Stadium before being downsized to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, and then it was revealed that the show is set to air on TNT as opposed to a pay-per-view format. Now, we know whether this was always the plan.
Asked by Scott Fishman of TV Insider, Khan confirmed that Grand Slam Australia was always planned to be a TV event.
“Yes. Having this be a TV event has always been the plan. That’s something that the network wanted. It’s something the network brought to us recently as an opportunity to follow NBA All-Star Saturday. We saw it as a huge opportunity. It was a great vote of confidence for our partners at Warner Brothers Discovery. It will be one of the biggest nights of the year on TNT. It’s a great opportunity given the lead-in,”
-Tony Khan
AEW Grand Slam Australia is set to follow on from the NBA All-Star Saturday, hence why Khan highlights the lead-in they’re likely to get from viewers on TNT. Listings have Grand Slam Australia airing as a two-hour broadcast beginning at 10:30pm Eastern on February 15. Although the show will be airing relatively late on a Saturday night, many will be intrigued to see how AEW fare when it comes to their first show in Australia.
At present, fans can look forward to matches such as Konosuke Takeshita and Kyle Fletcher vs Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega, and Mariah May’s AEW Women’s World Championship defence against ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on AEW Grand Slam Australia as soon as we hear more.
