Tony Schiavone isn’t watching current WWE.

Perhaps best known for his time behind the commentary desk in WCW and his work in AEW today, Tony Schiavone had a very short run with WWE between April 1989 and April 1990. During this time, he was the lead play-by-play commentator for SummerSlam and the Royal Rumble. However, now having spent over six years with All Elite Wrestling, Schiavone has clarified that he doesn’t keep up with modern WWE.

On his What Happened When podcast, Schiavone discussed how he doesn’t watch WWE’s product to avoid it affecting what he does for AEW.

“I have no interest in watching WWE or NXT current stuff, and that’s not to say anything bad about what they’re doing,” Schiavone stated. “I just have no interest in it because I want us to cut our own path and not try to be anything like them. I do have an interest in watching old independent wrestling and old ECW and even old WWE back in the day, or old NXT. We watched, of course, one of the matches we watched was, to me, the greatest women’s match I’d ever seen with Sasha Banks and Bayley. The current stuff, I’ll just watch our stuff and not let anything they do in the WWE influence how I call a match or what I do,”

Signing with All Elite Wrestling in August 2019, Schiavone has been one of the signature voices of AEW Dynamite since its inception. More recently, the veteran broadcaster has become commonplace on Collision alongside Nigel McGuinness.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on Tony Schiavone as soon as we hear more.
