Triple H has discussed the initial decision to let R-Truth’s contract expire.
On June 1, 2025, R-Truth announced via social media that his time with WWE was set to come to an end, revealing he’d been released from the company. However, after backlash from both fans and the locker room, the 54-year-old made his stunning return to our screens at Money in the Bank just six days later. Now, Triple H has discussed the initial decision to let R-Truth’s WWE deal expire.
In a sneak peak of WWE: Unreal Season 2 shared on the Netflix YouTube channel, Triple H recalled being far apart with R-Truth on his contract negotiations, informing the star that his contract would be allowed to expire after they couldn’t agree on terms. Here, he noted how Truth wasn’t fired or without a deal before his return at Money in the Bank.
“We got to a point in Truth’s run where his contract was coming up. When you are dealing with contracts and money, and you’re very far apart in the numbers and communication breaks down, it’s very easy for both sides to read into the communications differently. ‘Okay, well, if you’re not going to come to us, then Truth, we’re going to let your contract lapse. Your contract is at the end. We’re not going to renew.’ Knowing that hopefully maybe this will force his hand to say, ‘Well, hold on a second. Can we talk?’ He immediately went out on social and said he was fired, which he was never fired, contrary to prior belief. He was never not under contract with us.”

Adding to this, the Netflix teaser also showed Road Dogg talking through the business decision behind R-Truth’s contract being allowed to expire, explaining that the company was unlikely to see a reward on the outlay that came with renewing Truth’s deal.
“While it broke my heart, it made perfect business sense to not renew his contract. At his age, you might not get that reward back.”

Once he re-emerged, Truth went into a feud with John Cena and had a serious edge to his persona. However, after Cena’s sudden babyface turn just before SummerSlam, R-Truth also reverted to the comedy character fans were used to seeing from him earlier in his career. Still, he inked a new deal with the company last summer and is set to stay for the foreseeable future.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on R-Truth’s WWE contract renewal last summer as soon as we hear more.
