Undertaker: I Would’ve Loved To Face Sting At WrestleMania, Vince Didn’t Want It

The Undertaker discusses never facing Sting at WrestleMania.

Spending over a decade of their respective careers on opposite sides of the Monday Night War, the prospect of Sting taking on The Undertaker was a dream match for many years. When “The Icon” walked into WWE in 2014, fans thought a clash between the two legends was almost an inevitability before they retired. However, the bout never came to fruition, and “The Deadman” had now discussed the missed opportunity.

Speaking on his Six Feet Under podcast, Undertaker called a match with Sting the biggest miss of a WrestleMania, says Vince McMahon didn’t want to do the match.

“Obviously, people had already been clamoring for that match for a long time, and it seems like a no-brainer. Why on earth would you not do that? But for whatever reason, Vince did not see it, didn’t like it, didn’t want it. I was like, ‘Man, this is a home run. This is an easy main event for a pay-per-view.’ I don’t really have an answer. I never really had an in-depth conversation with Vince about why he didn’t want to do it. My goodness, Sting vs. Undertaker. Again, he obviously knows more about business than I do, but that one just seems like a home run. They decided to walk the guy instead of pitch to him. I don’t know. I don’t know what happened there. I don’t have any regrets. It wasn’t my decision, but my goodness, I would’ve loved to have been able to have that match. I remember running into Sting. I think it was after the WrestleMania that we didn’t work. I remember us being on the same plane together, talking. Like, ‘I don’t know. This is beyond me. I don’t know why.’ It is what it is, man, I guess. I think Sting, that’s probably got to be the biggest miss of a WrestleMania. Those two characters, that would have done some incredible business.”

Each year they were both active and signed by WWE, rumours would start circulating around whether we could finally see the two meet at WrestleMania. By the time Sting came in, Undertaker’s infamous streak had been broken, but the match would’ve certainly been a spectacle regardless of where they were in their careers.

As it happened, both men were on the card at WrestleMania 31 in March 2015, just not against each other. That night, Sting infamously lost to Triple H in a memorable match involving DX and the NWO, whilst The Undertaker defeated Bray Wyatt.

Of course, with both legends now retired, the match can never take place. Undertaker hung up his boots in 2020, with his final match in WWE being the iconic Boneyard match against AJ Styles at Wrestlemania 36. On the other hand, Sting’s last match took place at AEW Revolution in March 2024, teaming with Darby Allin to defeat the Young Bucks.

Both Undertaker and Sting are also WWE Hall of Famers with Sting being inducted in 2016 and Undertaker in 2022.
