WWE were reportedly planning to have GUNTHER face Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42.

Off the back of retiring both John Cena and AJ Styles within six weeks of one another, very few in WWE have as much going for them as GUNTHER. However, around a month out from WrestleMania, fans still don’t know what ‘The Ring General’ is set to do at the ‘Show Of Shows’. With the star having recently feuded with Dragon Lee, there doesn’t appear to be a clear next direction, though an update has emerged regarding WWE’s original plan for GUNTHER at WrestleMania 42.

According to Bodyslam, it’s believed GUNTHER was originally pencilled in to face Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42.

“Gunther’s feud with Dragon Lee was supposed to set up a program with Rey Mysterio leading to a match at WrestleMania. With Mysterio suffering a rib injury before the Royal Rumble, Gunther’s WrestleMania direction changed and it is currently unknown if he will compete in Las Vegas unless Mysterio is medically cleared.”

Mysterio suffered a rib injury on the January 26 edition of RAW, casting doubt over his participation in the Royal Rumble. Regardless, the 51-year-old still made the trip to Saudi Arabia for the match, though it remains his last appearance to date. Should word emerge that the Hall of Famer won’t be available, many will be crossing their fingers that GUNTHER doesn’t miss WrestleMania as a whole.

Still recovering from fractured ribs, it remains to be seen as to whether Mysterio will be cleared in time for April’s spectacle. In a recent interview, he revealed he’s feeling much better now than when he first sustained the injury, although his WrestleMania status remains unclear. You can read the latest update here.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on both GUNTHER’s WrestleMania plans and Rey Mysterio’s injury status as soon as we hear more.
