On November 19th, MJF defeated Jon Moxley to capture the AEW World Championship in the main event of the annual Full Gear PPV following a shocking heel turn from William Regal. The match only further cemented MJF’s position as the company’s top heel, however MJF’s promos, actions, and the general response from the AEW fans made many consider that the 26 year-old could turn babyface at the event.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has now provided an insight into the decision to keep MJF as the company’s top heel, noting that there were at least some discussions over the prospect of going down the direction of turning him face, although that idea was ultimately rejected.
“Multiple people have noted to us in the past week that there was discussion regarding having MJF be the lead face coming out of Full Gear.”

Whether the company will choose to revisit the idea of turning MJF face in the future remains to be seen, however in the immediate future that opportunity appears to have passed, as his position as the company’s leading heel is now more clear than ever.
MJF engaged in a war of words with Ricky Starks on this past Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite, with the pair set to collide at Winter is Coming next week in a match that will also see the Dynamite Diamond Ring put on the line.
