On May 3rd at NJPW’s Wrestling Dontaku show, Tama Tonga lost the NEVER Openweight Championship to Bullet Club’s new leader, David Finlay. The Guerillas of Destiny member has reportedly been of interest within WWE in recent months, and it now appears as though a potential move to America’s top promotion is increasingly possible.
Fightful Select are now reporting that Tama Tonga has been working without an NJPW contract, thus technically making him a free agent. The report also notes that Tonga had been subject to WWE’s hiring freeze, although with interest in the 40-year-old withstanding, a move to America could still be on the cards in the near future.
“Fightful Select has learned that former Bullet Club member Tama Tonga has long been working without a NJPW deal. We’d reported back in January that WWE had interest in Tama Tonga, to the point that there were some tentative creative ideas pitched for him. However, since then, we’ve learned that he’d been a victim of the unofficial hiring freeze and WWE had not maintained contact with him. However, we’ve heard that WWE higher ups did continue interest in Tama.”

Interestingly, Tama Tonga was seemingly written off upcoming NJPW shows following a stretcher job after his aforementioned title match with David Finlay, possibly hinting towards his time with the company coming to an end.
