The American Nightmare thinks he’ll lose the fans’ faith if he doesn’t leave WrestleMania 40 will gold.
In just three days, WrestleMania 40 will finally be upon us. The through line of the two-night event centres around the downfall of The Bloodline, with Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes looking to nullify the threat of the group before ‘The American Nightmare’ and ‘The Tribal Chief’ clash over the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship to close night two, but, given how last year’s Show of Shows ended, some fans are on edge about whether Rhodes will finally come out on top when the time comes for him to go one-on-one with Roman Reigns this Sunday night.
When asked whether fans could expect to see him ‘finish the story’ at WrestleMania 40, Rhodes spoke on First Take to say that, if he doesn’t walk out of Philadelphia as champion, he may as well become a commentator.
“Well, if I don’t finish the story, I might as well move over to commentary at that point. I might as well hit the booth,”
-Cody Rhodes
Stephen A. Smith then suggested that, even if Rhodes moved to commentary, he’d still be earning a lot of money, but Cody maintained that he wouldn’t be happy with anything other than a win this Sunday as he fears he may lose the faith of the fans if he loses for a second year in a row.
“No, it’s a lot of money. But there’s a thing in our world, the good guy, you’ll hear him referred to as the babyface, right. It’s hard enough to be a good guy in 2024, and they’ve rode with me, these fans, they’ve been supportive. They created the ‘We want Cody’ movement, the whole thing. So if I lost again, I feel like you lose their faith. More than anything, even if I didn’t believe, WrestleMania 40, that I was leaving Undisputed WWE Champion, if I didn’t believe, they believe. So I gotta do it for them, and I believe,”
-Cody Rhodes
Particularly given just how personal Rhodes’ battle with The Bloodline has become over the last few months, many will be walking into the Lincoln Financial Field expecting Cody to be crowned as the new Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. However, based on the shocking end to WrestleMania 39 last year, there is nothing certain about the outcome of this year’s showdown.
As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on Cody Rhodes ahead of WrestleMania 40 as soon as we hear more.
