Sheamus Recalls Having Edge’s Final WWE Match, Thinks It Was Meant To Be Damian Priest

Sheamus has looked back on Edge’s last WWE match.
On August 18, 2023, Edge took on Sheamus in a match that allowed ‘The Rated R Superstar’ to have one final WWE match before leaving the company. Their clash took place on SmackDown in front of the Canadian’s hometown crowd in Toronto, and many felt it was a fitting send off for the 11-time world champion. However, Sheamus has now revealed how his match with Edge almost didn’t happen.
Speaking on OTB Football, Sheamus revealed he’d heard Edge’s last WWE opponent was meant to be against Damian Priest.
“It actually wasn’t gonna happen. We pitched it at one stage and it just didn’t look like it was gonna come to fruition because there were a couple other things going on. And then I guess his final match was supposed to be against maybe Damian Priest is what I heard. I don’t know for sure. And then that all changed, and it ended up being me and him. At that time, though, we didn’t even realize it was going to be his last match. I think he was just kind of trying to figure out what he wanted to do. But it was a match we never had. We had tag matches and we tagged together, but we never actually had the match where we fought each other. It was great. It was so easy. It was so much fun. It was in Toronto. It was so easy. The crowd went insane. Beth Phoenix was there. His daughters were there. It was awesome. It was just so much fun.”

Should the company have opted for Damian Priest, the pair could’ve played off their shared history as part of The Judgment Day, with Edge leading the group until Priest and Rhea Ripley removed him from the faction. As it happened, though, the legend’s last WWE match with Sheamus was a hard-hitting encounter that received rave reviews from those watching around the world.
