Yuya Uemura Earns Hard-Fought Win Over Gabe Kidd In G1 Climax Night 15 Main Event

New Japan Pro-Wrestling hosted the 15th night of the G1 Climax from the Nisho Highway Arena in Tsu, Japan. This was a massive night for the tournament, as all nine remaining wrestlers in B Block were still alive in playoff contention, making all four matches must-watch.

The first tournament match of the evening saw Zack Sabre Jr. attempt to keep his playoff hopes alive against HENARE. After losing his first four matches and seemingly crashing out both in the tournament and in post-match press conferences, the 2024 G1 Climax winner entered Tsu on a two-match win streak and with all the momentum in the world. HENARE, meanwhile, was sitting on eight points and was not under any immediate threat of elimination.

This was a pretty standard match from both men. HENARE used his raw intensity and strength to go after ZSJ, while the Brit relied on his unique form of technical wizardry to try to tie up the Maori. There were a few moments during the match when it appeared that Zack was in real danger, but somehow he was able to either escape the move entirely or grit his way through it and continue the fight. The same could be said for HENARE, although, as mentioned earlier, the stakes weren’t quite as high for him.

The match eventually reached its crescendo when ZSJ trapped HENARE in a Triangle. The Maori attempted to put a stop to it with a Powerbomb, but ZSJ weakened him enough to force the tap at 15:32.

With the victory, ZSJ can now tout a three-match win streak, completely mirroring his abysmal start. Unfortunately, while he won the match, later results confirmed his elimination from playoff contention. Even still, he has one more league match on August 13, when he will take on Aaron Wolf.

HENARE, meanwhile, left Tsu with eight points and a lost advantage over ZSJ, but he can still make the playoffs. The Maori will take on his United Empire ally Callum Newman in a must-win match on August 13 as well.

The second league match of the evening saw Ren Narita attempt to derail Drilla Moloney’s hopes of making the playoffs. Narita entered the match with 10 points after picking up wins over some big names, including Callum Newman, Yuya Uemura and Zack Sabre Jr. Moloney, meanwhile, came into the show with eight points and key victories over Newman and Uemura to his name.

As this was a match featuring a House of Torture member, it came with the kind of shenanigans you absolutely hate to see. Yoshinobu Kanemaru jumped Moloney as the Brit was making his way to the ring, with Dick Togo continuing the onslaught before Narita joined in. Luckily, the crowd inside the Nisho Highway Arena was thrilled to see Moloney somehow even the odds with his immense strength and fighting spirit.

This wasn’t a great match, to be honest, but the crowd loved it when Moloney destroyed Narita with the Drilla Killa to earn the crucial victory in 11:54. With the big win, Moloney is still alive in the competition. He has now finished his league matches, as his final bout against Shota Umino was cancelled. Narita, on the other hand, will battle Gabe Kidd at Korakuen Hall on Thursday.

The semi-main event was a massive step up in quality, as Aaron Wolf took on Callum Newman. This was the third straight match of the night where one of the wrestlers involved was in danger of elimination, with Wolf being the one at risk this time. The rookie had earned just six points heading into the show, while Newman was all the way up to 10.

Callum Newman’s strategy in this match was somewhat odd, as he attempted to take out Aaron Wolf using his nonexistent judo acumen. That strategy quickly evaporated as it became abundantly clear that Newman had a better chance of dodging raindrops than flipping the Judo Olympic champion. Wolf, for his part, started the match with exactly the same strategy.

Newman switched up his strategy to bring as much chaos as possible to Wolf. This was one of the rare matchups where Newman was the clear veteran, so he used some tricks to confuse and overwhelm the rookie. The only thing he didn’t account for was that his opponent is freakishly strong and possesses an enormous amount of fighting spirit. While several wrestlers, especially heels, have been able to catch Wolf with a loss using these tricks in the past, perhaps Newman’s unwillingness to fully commit to the strategy and instead wrestle him straight up ultimately cost him the match.

Wolf was able to outlast Newman and eventually beat him with his Head and Arm Triangle Lock at 16:57, after previously hitting his opponent with a crazy Canadian Destroyer and Angle Slam combination. With the victory, Wolf will head into his final league match against Zack Sabre Jr. with a very real chance of making the playoffs in his first-ever G1, while Newman remains on 10 points and in need of a big win over HENARE to do the same.

The main event of the evening featured Gabe Kidd and Yuya Uemura in a match with no immediate risk of elimination for either man. Instead, the match served as a fascinating look at what a New Japan match in 2026 could look like between a total babyface in Uemura and a total heel in Kidd. The story was that Kidd entered this year’s G1 ready to show as much vitriol and disrespect towards New Japan as possible, despite saying just a few years earlier that he would die for the promotion, until he found a worthy opponent. For many fans, that opponent was always going to be Uemura.

So while Kidd had been putting together some middling matches, the hope was that once he took on Uemura, we could finally see a performance from Kidd that was truly G1-worthy.

Kidd tried to force Uemura into a brawl on the outside during the early moments of the match, but Uemura wanted to have a legitimate contest instead. Kidd would quickly turn to his most nefarious side, ruthlessly biting and dragging Uemura around both inside the ring and on the outside. Uemura was thrown into rows of chairs before Kidd returned to the ring and mocked his opponent for a while. After Uemura made it back inside, Kidd began unloading with several strikes to Uemura’s pec, causing it to bleed slightly. Uemura would finally get some offense in soon after, hitting Kidd with a couple of armdrags before dropping him with a hard Hammerlock DDT.

Both men then began trading massive moves, with Kidd hitting Uemura with a great sequence of a Lariat, Brainbuster, and Sit-Out Powerbomb for a near fall. Uemura answered with a High Fly Flow and a Cross Armbreaker. The use of the High Fly Flow carried even more weight given that Kidd had previously attacked and disrespected the innovator of the maneuver, Hiroshi Tanahashi, earlier this summer. Uemura using the HFF felt symbolic of his connection to the “Ace” of New Japan, a man who was once one of Kidd’s greatest champions.

Uemura continued to put pressure on Kidd’s arm, which he had been weakening throughout the match, before the two began trading strikes. Both men walloped each other with punches and headbutts, with Uemura eventually catching Kidd with a Dragon Suplex, perhaps another nod to a New Japan legend in Tatsumi Fujinami. Kidd answered with one of his crazy Drill-A-Hole Piledrivers for a close near fall.

Kidd then set up for a Death Rider, but Uemura was able to wake up in time to catch him with a flash roll-up and earn the victory at 22:10. This was a great match and well worth the watch!

NJPW will return on Wednesday night with Night 16 of the G1 Climax, featuring the final league matches from A Block. Shingo Takagi will take on SANADA in a match where only pride will be on the line, as both men are already out of playoff contention. Yuto-Ice and Hirooki Goto will then face off in a match for the love of the game before Oleg Boltin has the difficult task of dragging Great-O-Khan through another match. Yota Tsuji will then take on the other underperformer in his block, Jake Lee, while Ryohei Oiwa will attempt to pull off an upset against Konosuke Takeshita in the main event.
