Adam Copeland Discusses How His Upcoming Maple Leaf Pro Appearance Came To Be
Adam Copeland opens up on what led to his upcoming Maple Leaf Pro appearance.
MLP’s Northern Rising event will take place at Maple Leaf Gardens on October 3, with the promotion teasing the arrival of a major star in the weeks leading up to the show. That speculation came to an end in late July when Adam Copeland was revealed as the man who had “answered the call,” with that phrase turning out to be quite literal.
Copeland recently discussed how the opportunity came together during an appearance on MLP Mayhem, explaining how he ended up answering the call and becoming part of MLP’s upcoming event.
“In terms of doing this show, I’m contracted with AEW. But the beautiful part about Tony Khan and his outlook in terms of pro wrestling is that he wants pro wrestling to flourish. AEW and Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling are partners. It’s a partnership that can help wrestling thrive in a place that needs to have wrestling thrive. He also knew what it means to me and how special this place is to me. And I don’t think I was going to be able to retire without a bit of a bee in my bonnet unless I did this. I think this allows me to go right. The seeds for all of this coming to fruition started with Scott D’Amore seeing an interview that I did where I said my place, my hallowed ground that I have to perform in before I’m done is Maple Leaf Gardens. So he shot me a text. He goes, ‘Hey, remember me? I think we can make this happen.’ Here we are however many years later, and we’re making it happen.”

Copeland’s comments reflect a broader approach to talent sharing that has been seen under Tony Khan, with AEW wrestlers permitted to appear for promotions around the world and some talents holding arrangements that allow them to regularly work elsewhere. Konosuke Takeshita is one example, having recently competed in the G1 Climax for the third consecutive year.
Since returning to wrestling, Adam Copeland has been making a “tour” of venues he wants to visit before he retires. One such location was Arena México, where he received one of the loudest crowd reactions of the night and later told Tony Schiavone that it was as loud, if not louder, than his famous return at the 2020 Royal Rumble.
