Adam Copeland Likens Arena México Reaction To Royal Rumble Return
Adam Copeland is still riding the high from AEW’s trip to Arena México.
AEW Grand Slam: Mexico was a special night for many on the AEW roster, but it was particularly important for those performing at Arena Mexico for the first time. Among those ticking “The Cathedral Of Lucha Libre” off their list was industry veteran Adam Copeland, with “The Rated R Superstar” eliciting a huge reaction from those in attendance when his music hit. Now, Copeland has discussed how his ovation matches up to others from his career.
According to Tony Schiavone on his What Happened When podcast, Adam Copeland likened his Arena México pop to that he received during the 2020 Royal Rumble.
“The very next day I sent a text to Adam Copeland. I said, ‘I know you’ve had a long and tremendous career. I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced a pop like that before in your life. Because I’ve never experienced anyone get that reaction anywhere.’ And he said, ‘It’s probably the best. When I returned at the Royal Rumble, I got a pop that was equal to that. But that has to go down as the best.’ We opened the show with him, and it was his first time in Arena México. The fans lost their freaking minds. I remember just looking at Excalibur and looking at Nigel [McGuinness], and I was shaking my head like, ‘What the hell?’ So it was in many ways a special night.”

In January 2020, those in Houston came unglued as the man then known as “Edge” officially came out of retirement in a shocking moment. It was truly one of the loudest reactions in history, and for Copeland to put Grand Slam: Mexico’s crowd alongside it shows how energetic they really were.
