Swerve Strickland Reveals Three Wrestlers Who Inspired His Ring Work
AEW’s Swerve Strickland reveals three legends who helped inspire his in-ring style.
As time goes on, wrestlers often take inspiration for their movesets from those that came before them. Some focus on using a limited moveset that they know they can do well. Others branch out and add new moves all the time, and many never know when inspiration will hit with regard to a new move. Now, Swerve Strickland has reflected on who’s inspired him and who he works with today to level up his game.
Speaking to Hot 97, Swerve Strickland named three legends were what inspired what he does in the ring.
“Rey Mysterio is my number one. Always. Uncle Rey is my guy. I would say [Adam] Copeland, or Edge. And then Shawn Michaels are my top three. I was able to learn from all three. I wrestled Rey. Couldn’t wrestle Shawn. Copeland, I get to see him every week. I’ll be coming up with something for the match that night, and I’m like, ‘Hmm, I’m on the fence with this.’ I go to him and he’ll like, ‘Nope, this is the one you should take.’ And he always has the best interests of the performer, too, which always feels good to me.”

Swerve is one of the top wrestlers in AEW today, being a former Men’s World Champion, and one-third of the current Trios Champion alongside The New Level. Even during their partnership, the star has been breaking out some new combos and moves as he adjusts to life in the trios division.
On the topic of his moveset, it’s worth remembering Swerve previously noted his famous House Call came about because he saw Johnny Gargano do a variation of the move, with Swerve choosing to add in a hook move to the kick to make it more impactful. Thus, one of the star’s most iconic moves was born.
