Kenny Omega vs. Bryan Danielson At AEW Grand Slam Hits Five-Year Anniversary
It’s been five years since Kenny Omega battled Bryan Danielson at AEW Grand Slam.
2021 was an important year for All Elite Wrestling, especially since, in September of that year, the All Out show brought Bryan Danielson and Adam Cole to the promotion. To capitalise on that momentum, “The American Dragon” fought AEW World Champion Kenny Omega in his debut match for the promotion just weeks after his arrival, with two of the industry’s best meeting for the first time in the sold-out Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The match kicked off the very first AEW Grand Slam event and set a tone for what would become an incredibly strong three-year run for Danielson. In the end, the match ended in a time limit draw, with the only detriment being that the pair never met for their rematch.
A key reason why the match is so memorable is that fans were able to see Omega and Danielson lock horns on TV, as opposed to the promotion saving it for a pay-per-view. Truthfully, wrestling companies are often right to save their biggest clashes for the most important shows, but, when they hold off, factors like injuries and other things out of their control could postpone the plans or even lead to them not happening at all. As such, AEW wasting little time in showcasing this match went down extremely well with fans, and appears to be a smart move in hindsight given Danielson is now retired and Omega is at the tail end of his career himself.
Plus, the first Grand Slam succeeding helped it to continue to this day. Since that night in 2021, there have been multiple Grand Slam events in New York, and they then expanded to Australia, Mexico, and will soon be in Paris, France, with reports suggesting AEW are expecting a sell-out crowd when their make their debut in France.
