AEW may soon have one less championship.

At present, not including Ring of Honor, AEW have a total of eight active championships across their respective divisions, a number that rises to 15 when their sister company is included. The topic of whether the promotion has too many titles is something that’s been long debated among fans, and now it appears as if a possible unification could be on the way.

Per Fightful Select, it’s believed that the idea of combining the AEW International and Continental Championships has been pitched within the company.

“The common possibility was that of Kazuchika Okada’s Continental Championship being merged with the International Title in some capacity. AEW sources that Fightful has spoken to claim that the combination has been pitched dating back a number of months. To the point that many in the company had considered them firm creative plans.”

Shortly after Kenny Omega’s return to the company, a future clash with Kazuchika Okada was teased on Dynamite, with All In Texas hinted as the potential destination for the next chapter in their rivalry. With ‘The Cleaner’ capturing the International Title this past weekend at Revolution, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see all the gold on the line at Globe Life Field should Omega and Okada clash once more this summer.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any further updates on a possible unification between the AEW International and Continental Championships as soon as we hear more.
