CM Punk is said to want to work with the Samoan Submission Machine, Samoa Joe upon his return to AEW.

It’s been heavily reported over the last couple of months that CM Punk’s AEW return will coincide with the inception of the company’s new Saturday show AEW: Collision with June 17 likely to be the start date for the new addition to the company’s weekly schedule.

Of course, with the return of CM Punk seemingly just over a month away, many fans are wondering what the future will hold for the Straight Edge star when he reappears on AEW TV.

In recent weeks it has been indicated that Chris Jericho is a possible option to work with Punk upon his return, with a meeting even taking place between the two sides. However, Fightful Select are now reporting that the Chicago-born former AEW World Champion has been pitching for Samoa Joe to be among his first opponents following his return to the company.

“Sources close to Punk have indicated that he’s become increasingly interested in working with Samoa Joe.”

Samoa Joe was most recently seen enjoying a TNT Championship run, before dropping the title on March 5 at AEW Revolution. The star is yet to appear on TV since the loss.

Fightful were unable to confirm whether the two will have a one-off match, a full feud or whether the pitch was even taken into consideration but it was made clear that Punk had been pushing the idea for at least a month.

Should the match come to be, it will be the first time the pair have shared a ring in eighteen years, with their last encounter coming in ROH in 2005. Though, CM Punk and Samoa Joe have considerable history, including two time-limit draws between them in the past.

As always, we’ll aim to provide any updates on CM Punk and the scheduled plans for his return as we hear more.
